REPORT ON THE EFFECT OF THE SOILMIX MACHINE ON ROOT DISTRIBUTION OF VINES

AUTHOR: Prof. E (Eben) Archer,   MScAgric, PhD (Agric) (Stell.)  Viticulture and Oenology, University of Stellenbosch, Stellenbosch, Western Cape, South Africa

Fields of specialisation in teaching involve Vitis species and rootstock cultivars; plant spacing; training of vines and winter pruning; trellising systems; canopy management as well as the choice of suitable terrain to achieve specific aims with wine types. In this process, much work is concentrated on the physiology of the grapevine in order to understand its behavioural patterns under different conditions. A result of this has been the establishment of scientifically founded farm planning methods by which the quality of the wine can be optimised for each farm. The research emphasis is on principles of canopy management and practices, while attention is also paid to minimum input practices (including winter pruning procedures) in order to improve the economic results of wine farms.
