Soilmix - Root Study (Maize) |
|
Dr JAJ (Arri)
van Vuuren
|
Prof. AS (Andries) Claassens |
| Profile holes were dug late, after the mealies were already dry. Only primary roots were still visible. It was very clear that no root growth could be found underneath the layer that's been ploughed. The reason for that is that the conventionally ploughed areas had an oversupply of soil acidity and had also densified in the conventionally ploughed areas. |
In
contradiction to this, roots were found up to a
depth of 1.2m in areas
where Soilmix soil preparation methods had been implemented.
(Please scroll down to see photographs comparing upper growth:
rows to the left were deep ploughed by the Soilmix machine (1.2m
deep), and rows to the right were ploughed in the conventional way. )
